Half done is well begun !

MY FIRST HALF MARATHON..!
Cannot express the joy of running the first HM, ...but in a little note of a new innocent kid on the block I must share this much....
DNF (did not finish) is better than DNS (did not start)
IAaF (I am a finisher) is better than DNF,
PB ( Personal best) is better than the IAaF,
And after doing all that...
Nothing compares to tapping the innocent tiny palms extended by the young and cute cheer leaders from the crowd...extending little little goodies with expression that looks like when the god smiles looking at the mirror !
did not miss out tapping any of them...!

A hundred runners in the mind !

*A hundred runners in the mind*

To the runner that makes a hundred finishes at every start line, having made his hundred friends finish their journey to that start line or makes a hundred starts at every finish line to enrol a hundred for their embarkment for a higher goal in fitness.

While on the run, pushing for a hundred who are on their fitness journey, or in the painful and frustrating recovery from injury or disability pursuing their individual races.

A hundred plans, a hundred workout stats, a hundred therapies, a hundred treatments, a hundred races and a hundred runners in the mind.

Don't be mistaken with this peaceful nap at his 100k finish somewhere in the Himalayas, has hundreds of runners buzzing around in the head. Helping each of them to run his or her own race he can't help himself ending up running along with each of them, almost.

Let it be the humble soft spoken elite fighting for every second to the wins or that 5 year old kid who is recovering from a disabled limb, or a spoiled brat who seeks redemption by getting back into the regular life, all look up eagerly to him for the little sweet nibbles or nudges from him as he exactly knows all of their individual progress and knows exactly the language to speak to each of them.

The hundred cells that are tapped to this perpetual battery of motivation, that is known in respect as "psycho"

Happy birthday Ashish sir, wish you a hundred into hundred into a hundred runs more !

The run we cannot miss - Bardoli Marathon

The thoughts and afterthoughts had only one feeling getting louder and louder in my mind, after running more than the 14km route with a lanky young boy called Tarang, in the Feel the Forest run by Bardoli Runners organized in the last monsoon in association with the Forest Department at Padamdungri.

Every platform created for the youngsters in this region is about celebrating and nurturing young talents, it’s about bringing them to the forefront.

It’s about instilling the belief in them that they can and giving a chance to show the same.

It’s about being there for them and makes them go ahead.

It’s about no false promises but only true gestures.

It’s about motivation and inspiration to the future runners in making.

It’s about the likes of the young runners like Meet, Mann, Parth, Ravi, Shiv, Tarang, Krenil, Sunil, Naitik and so many.

It’s about the young prodigy and all aspirants of the new India, the new India in making.

This is new India, it’s not weak but it's strong agile and determined.

Sardar Vallabhbhai told that being strong is not an option, but it’s the only option.

We can build a safe India only if we are strong and healthy.

Run for strong India.

Run for a safe life.

Run Bardoli Marathon.

A run not to be missed!

A run I cannot miss!

It's a hard-hitting sunny afternoon, on a lonesome road, while driving fast to reach a message to the key aid station Galkund, I screeched brakes of my bat-mobile, stopped and got out all in one action, seeing a runner on his knees, facing towards the woods in the valley, on a milestone, which would be around 37 km in a 50K grueling run through the forest of South Dangs, that happened on the cusp of 2018-19, the Ultra extravaganza called SUMMIT 4.0.

Worried to the brink of panic, I jumped across the road without looking both sides and went on close to him, who looked like a short and slim typical runner-like shape, trying to take out the contents of the stomach which seemed to be the most difficult task at that moment of time for him. His limbs unable to move, and head was thrown down in total fatigue, he looked over his shoulder with great effort, only to look at me for a second from the corner of his eye, and then threw back his head down in turmoil of what was happening to him, not believing in any prospects of helping him that I had brought with myself.
My asking him was unnecessary as my assumption of him quitting was almost certain, seeing him in that condition. He was totally down and out.

Well, down for sure, but out? No.

He turned back, with elbows on his knees and head still down in disdain, asked me, "Haju ketlu baki chhe? (how much is still left?)"

I clearly sensed the agony and frustration in his voice. Agony must be of the inability to move his body like he always does on the course of any race, and frustration of not being able to understand what was happening, maybe!

Maybe he was bonking for the first time!

I immediately told myself that I am asking him to quit and to sit in the car and rush him to nearest aid station Jakhana. And before I could put that thought into motion, he stood up!

I inadvertently took a step ahead to hold him, and he confidently gave me a wry smile, took the water bottle from my hand, gulped a good amount, and expressed his thankfulness with his bright whites of the eyes and started walking towards the finish.

I was left alone as I watched him climb the next rolling hill, walking and slowly pick up a trot that soon became a canter when he approached the next mound.

He vanished.

Was that it? I immediately felt the worthlessness of my way of thinking of having him considered the quitter! Though It was the happiest loss at the judgment ever, it took a couple of moments to sink in. My ego, if you can call it for better understanding, had taken a hit, as at the start of this few seconds of experience, I was naturally thinking of myself on the giving side, now left wandering alone, on the receiving side. The volunteer in me, who was in overwhelmingly helping mode, had just been overwhelmed by the look of the eyes of that respectful contempt towards my unexpressed offer to him to quit.

This is the second most thought-provoking experience that I had after the first one being at the SUMMIT 1.0, when the two galloping runners flew by me and vanished on the halfway mark to their glide to finish of the Full Marathon.

His name is Ravi, a young chap from Bardoli, known as the "barefoot from Bardoli", and is one of the many prodigies that the historic land of Barodli holds in the treasure. Eager to prove his mettle in sports, he is looking ahead to a promising career in running, along with many alike, who are natural runners, and all they seek is a chance.

Bardoli marathon is not just another marathon, but a platform for such raw talents to show up. A chance where these jewels can chance their glitter to be showcased, and then be on course to make India proud by pursuing the sport.

Don't look at his attire as he doesn't have an usual one but adorns the proud Bardoli runners logo, don't look at his hair as its different, and never look at his shoes, as he hardly needs any.

Just look at that look in the eyes, displaying the iron will to take on the challenge and finish what is started, which is quite representative of the iron will that the land of Sardar Vallabhbhai holds true.

How can I miss running the Bardoli Marathon.? And how can anyone miss running the Bardoli Marathon,? An event intended towards beholding the spirit of the iron will, of Ravi and so many alike.

See you in Bardoli on 17th Feb 2019. The Bardoli Marathon, a run I cannot miss.

Why do they run !?

Why do you want to climb mount Everest?

"Because it's there !" answered a respected mountaineer, and that has become the legend of the spirit of mountaineering.
Before I was not running I used to ask myself the same question regarding running.

Why do these guys run so much? What's in it ? They must be crazy.!

To answer our question, hardly we knew that we were destined to meet a psycho (and in fact a lot of such) when the two causes met at the SUMMIT 2015, which was held in the mountains of Saputara, and team PRAYAS gang was asked to volunteer.
Just a couple of years down the line to that, I along with all my team PRAYAS gang, am into running,  participating, and contributing to the cause.

Why do I mention this now?  I am reminded the same by a small gang from our Surti Runners family that is headed to Himalayas as we speak. Why? To underline the answer to that question above, by doing a Himalayan Ultra known as Uttarkashi 220, organised by The Globe Racers.

Leading the pack, the maverick of the Surti Runners, Dr Ashish a.k.a the Psycho, doing 220, and drafting behind his whirl wind, there are Jatin, Chintan, Mihir and Khyatiben, doing their 100 Ks, each of them are no lesser in grit and adventure !
While I still clearly visualise the similar dare by Dr Nehal earlier, smiling his way through in sandals down the steep slopes of Masoori crewed by Sandipbhai, I didn't think I would get to be any closer to this phenomena that I would actually be inspired to do it some day !

The brief company of the god's own soul Bhupi sir at SUMMIT 2.0 was an inspirational encounter that gave all of us an insight into an ultra runners mind and heart. And here he is leading from the front ! Almost obviously.

And with the ultra man Amishbhai joining as support team, the team is poised to melt some good mountain miles.! Trying to match the craze are the crew to the runners namely Sushmaben, Harshil, Birjubhai, Samir (Sam), Keyurbhai, and Sameer Kavani.

No matter how arduous it sounds, with a cumulative 34,000 + feet of climbing and just as much descent in a single stage race, the gang is up to it and its broadly written on their determined yet smiling faces!

Cutting through the lower Himalayas and rallying through spectacularly scenic villages, this race is actually a mountaineer's delight, and the mountaineers turned novice runners of team PRAYAS are actually fascinated by this adventure.

Least can we wait for the day when we will also do this, and we cross our hearts we will, the juvenile mountaineer in us talks to the infant runner in us, ..."don't ask ever again that why do they run !", as we wish all the best to the SURTI RUNNERS brave hearts !

All the very best runners who are looking to be mountaineers, from the mountaineers who are looking to be runners ! team PRAYAS and the SURTI RUNNERS family wish you all the best for the ultra !

Go high, Go long, Go Blue !

Don't forget to bring back some clouds from the top destination cloud 9, that is our mountaineering school, the NIM, Uttarkashi , The FINISH Line !

a new life !

A super day at Team PRAYAS shelter..!! 3rd May it was.

6 releases in one day.

2 monkeys

4 dogs.

All inpatient with bad wounds or fractures stayed with us for quite a long time, and they healed....and went back to their family, to their homes.

Just see how they are showing their relief and happiness by seeing their relatives, the two-legged animals who used to feed them and take care of them, and were there to call team Prayas when they were in need.

They called on to keep a tab on their healing and recovery just like the relatives and family do.

And the monkeys came into the need of medical attention due to accidents. Electrocution or accidental fall brought them in and expert handling was much needed to get them back to an able position.

Shelter team, volunteers and ambulance team, A super teamwork, to help the trust of the four-legged be restored in the two-legged animals.

Please enjoy the happy moments.

Case 1: Front leg fracture, a sad face!

Stayed with us for 26 days...

Case 2: Injured on the neck and ear. Stayed with us for 19 days

Case 3: A Bad Tumore on the Tail.

Stayed with us for 26 days

Case 4: Back leg dislocation

Stayed with us for 19 days

Not only they have gone back as healed ones, they have gone back as healthy vaccinated dogs so safe for the society and other dogs, as well as whenever the opportunity presents, they go back as sterilised dogs, so they do not contribute to the stray dog population.

The monkeys were released in the appropriate location as discussed with the forest department after healing them for electrocution and accident case. a release which is at night has lesser clarity but we can see the monkey jumping out for freedom for the rest of the life, with injuries healed and also vaccinated.

The most heartening part of the videos is the connection of the people who called us with the dogs we healed. See the attachment of the stray dogs with their caretakers and family. The humanity lives..!
